Another advocate for a flexible approach appeared in the global political arena. The President of Turkey seems to be making use of the current situation. The migrant crisis in Europe brought several billion euros to the country. The downing of a Russian military jet earlier this year enhanced Erdogan’s image both within and beyond the country, showing that Turkey’s boundaries are sovereign. Even a coup attempt helped Recep Tayyip Erdogan purge the ranks. The politician always manages to escape severe consequences.
First, Russian authorities lifted restrictions in the tourism and trade spheres. Now, the two countries resumed negotiations over the Turkish Stream construction. The decision was approved by the Energy Ministries of Russia and Turkey. This time, the project is run way more actively. A working group has been already appointed and it resolves current issues quickly. The Gazprom Deputy Chair said in an interview that the Turkish Energy Minister confirmed readiness to build the first gas pipeline.
A month ago, the Kremlin announced that it was not going to resume the Turkish Stream project. Even the idea of cooperation with Turkish partners seemed impossible. However, time flows and all kind of unpredictable things happen.
