US retail sales hit all-time high on Black Friday

According to Adobe Systems Inc., last weekend the Americans spent more than $5 billion on Internet purchases. On Black Friday consumer spending increased by 21 percent year-over-year to $3.34 billion.

This year, people placed a record number of orders via retailers’ mobile sites. Compared to 2015, online shopping increased by 33 percent to $1.2 billion.

According to the US National Retail Federation, 154 million people in the US used Black Friday discounts and special offers, up from 151 million people last year. The average spending per person fell to $289 from $300 last year. The average shopper spent about 214 dollars on gifts. The best-selling products are mobile devices, hoverboards, Lego construction sets and Barbie dolls.

These two months before Christmas are crucial for retailers’ financial performance. Official figures show that October and November make up to 40 percent of annual sales. In 2016, sales are expected to grow only by 3.6 percent year-over-year up to 655.8 billion dollars.
