Recently it has been revealed how much the French presidential candidates spent during their pre-election campaigns. Emmanuel Macron was the first choice of France’s majority and the first to spend the biggest sum.
The former candidate and the current President of France paid out 16.7 million euros for his election campaign. This figure was published in Journal Officiel, the official gazette of the French Republic. The second in the list is Marine Le Pen, the leader of the National Front, who spent 12.4 million euros. Reportedly, she received the major part of this sum from the Russian government, supposedly in the form of bank credits. However, Russia wasted this money for nothing as the outcome of the election was not favorable for it. Jean-Luc Melenchon, the leader of La France Insoumise, turned to be the thriftiest candidate. He spent 10.7 million euros.
At the same time, no candidate broke the law which stipulates that the budget of the pre-election campaign should not exceed 22.5 million euros.
