Russia cancels Africa’s debt of $20 billion

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that his country wrote off debts owed by African countries amounting to $20 billion under the program of providing aid to heavily indebted states.

Guinea’s President Alpha Conde and Vladimir Putin agreed to strengthen coordination of foreign activity in both bilateral relations and international cooperation, particularly in the interaction of Russia and the African Union. Remarkably, Alpha Conde is the current chairperson of this union.

Lately, the African Union has attracted a lot of attention in the international arena. Thus, its chairperson Mr. Conde participated in the outreach meeting that was held during the BRICS summit in China in September.

Russia actively supports initiatives of the international community designed to encourage development of the African countries. In particular, Moscow cancelled debt of $20 billion owed by the African states.

In 2016, $5 million were allocated for supporting the African states under the World Food Program. In 2017, the UNIDO launched a project intended for developing aquaculture and fisheries in Ethiopia. This project is sponsored by Russia.
