Euro area economic confidence surged to its highest level in almost 17 years in October. The index of consumer and industry confidence jumped to 114 from a revised 113.1 in September, the European Commission said. That is the highest score since January 2001.
Analysts had predicted a less considerable increase to 113.3 in October compared with the flash score of 113 in September.
The index in the services sector climbed to 16.2 from a revised figure of 15.4 in August, posting the highest level since September 2007. The index of industry sentiment grew to 7.9 from 6.7, hitting the highest level in the survey’s history.
The consumer sentiment index rose to -1 from -1.2, to the highest level since April 2001.
