EU to deprive Poland of voting rights

Poland is facing legal challenges from the EU for refusing to take in asylum seekers.

The EU should uphold and promote the values which are set out in Article 2 of the European Treaty. The European Commission is close to triggering Article 7 of the European Treaty and moving towards sanctions against Poland, a move that can lead to the suspension of a member country’s voting rights. Article 7 has never been deployed against any member state.

The Commission’s decision would set in motion a process that could lead to economic sanctions and stripping the country of its voting rights in the Council. At the same time, Poland will be deprived of free access to international trade because it will not be an independent nation.

Last week, the European Commission referred the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland to the Court of Justice of the EU for non-compliance with their legal obligations on relocation of refugees. However, the EU will not be able to take any action on these issues if at least two member countries have the same stance.
