Donald Trump never hesitates to make defiant statements and take bizarre decisions. Investors view his tweets and public addresses as market-moving events. Indeed, global financial markets are highly sensitive to his verbal interventions.
Citing anonymous European officials, Washington Post reported that President Donald Trump tried to persuade his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron to pull France out of the European Union in exchange for a beneficial trade deal. The US President reportedly offered France better bilateral trade terms than in other EU countries. Donald Trump made this proposal during Macron’s visit to Washington in April. “Why don’t you leave the European Union?” the US leader asked Macron. In fact, the two policymakers held a private discussion on trade relations in the White House.
It is not clear whether Trump said this as a joke or made an effort to shake the European integrity. Interestingly, neither Washington nor Paris has commented on the happening, but they have not denied it as well. Anyway, either of the parties takes advantage of the rumor. Donald Trump enhanced his image of a tough policymaker who dares to offer such deals. Macron has gain reputation as an ardent Europhile. So, he again asserted interests of the EU during his meeting with Trump.
