The UK unemployment rate fell to 4% in second the quarter from 4.2% earlier. That was the lowest rate since February 1975, official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed.
Britain’s unemployment fell by 65,000 to 1.36 million in three months to June, while employment was unchanged at 75.6% to mark the highest level since 1975. The ONS figures also showed a 42,000 increase in the number of jobs created during the April-June period. The UK economy added 313,000 jobs compared with the year before.
Last month, the number of British people receiving unemployment benefits increased by 6,200 following a 9,000 increase a month earlier. The level of registered unemployment in July this year remained at the level of 2.5%. The indicator includes active job seekers who receive unemployment benefits.
In the second quarter of 2018, the UK average weekly earnings increased by 2.4% (excluding bonuses). The earnings growth including bonuses came in at 2.7%.
