The annual salary of the British Bank Chairman Robert Diamond will reach 1,35 million pounds (2,2 million dollars) in 2011. The Financial Times reports that it is much more than Diamond’s annual salary in 2010 totaling to 250 000 pounds.
Besides, the main earnings of top-managers in Barclays come not from salary, it is bonuses. By the end of 2010 Diamond got a bonus in the amount of 6,5 million pounds. This amount does not include additional shares of 6,7 million pounds for work prior to 2010 and 2,25 million pounds which Diamond can obtain in case the bank achieves certain goals in the nearest years.
All in all, 231 top-managers of Barclays received 554 million pounds as a bonus for 2010. On average, each banker gained 2,4 million pounds.
The bonus of Diamond and other Barclays top-managers has been widely discussed in Germany during the recent weeks. Initially, it was supposed that Diamond will get 9,5 million, not 6.5 million pounds, but later the bonus size was reduced.
A lot of local politicians, journalists, public organizations come against record high bonuses in British banks saying that financial companies exactly caused the latest years crisis.
Diamond was protecting multi-million bonuses for bankers again and again. In January 2011 he declared that bonuses decrease will lead to employee turnover. He also called for closing the debates about the salaries and “move on”.
