EU allocates €232M to combat coronavirus

Fight against the coronavirus requires both a lot of efforts and money. Analysts suppose that the EU authorities are ready to meet such requirements. According to preliminary estimates, expenses can surpass 230 million euros. The European Commission has already allocated 232 million euros to stop the virus spread. Members of the European Commission called on the international community to join efforts in order to eradicate COVID-19.
Janez Lenarčič, EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, supposes that the epidemic is a global threat that should be addressed. The EU representatives think that the virus can be stopped only if all European countries combine their forces. Besides, they emphasize that the EU is spending money on the development of the vaccine and other necessary medicines that can help people infected with the coronavirus.
The sum allocated by the EU will be distributed among those who need help. For example, €114 million will support the World Health Organization (WHO) and €15 million will be donated to Africa’s authorities to help the infected people. At the same time, €100 million will go to urgently needed research whereas €90 million will be used to form a partnership between the EU and the pharmaceutical industry and €10 million will be spent on research in such fields as epidemiology, diagnostics, treatment, and prevention. Moreover, €3 million will be used for repatriation flights of EU citizens from Wuhan.
