Japan unveils nearly $1 trillion stimulus package to rescue economy

The coronavirus epidemic has taken over the world. Practically all countries have been hit by the virus consequences. At a time when there is no cure from the disease, the only way to combat the coronavirus is to lessen the economic fallout. While many countries have already introduced a quarantine regime and stimulus measures to soften the economic blow, Japan preferred sitting on the sidelines. However, recently, Japan’s Shinzo Abe has finally grabbed the reins and joined the fight against the COVID-19. In quick succession, the prime minister declared a state of emergency and detailed a plan to better the economy. Following in the footsteps of the US, Japan rolled out a nearly $1 trillion stimulus package to support the capital and six other prefectures. The country's authorities are doing everything possible to reduce the negative effect of the pandemic on citizens and businesses. After declaring a state of emergency, Tokio reassured residents that it would help them financially to survive the crisis. “The state of emergency will allow us to strengthen current steps to prevent an increase in infections while ensuring that economic activity is sustained as much as possible”, Abe said. He also added that "the emergency would last around a month and give governors the authority to call on people to stay at home and businesses to close." Such drastic measures will also help the government tighten social distancing measures. Japan’s authorities are planning to provide assistance for all groups of citizens. The stimulus package includes payments to the population and small businesses. Apart from that, there will be a delay in social payments and taxes.
