A takeover bid for mobile company

The leading software corporation Microsoft purchases Nokia’s mobile phone arm. The parties have already discussed the details of the deal worth $7.2 billion. Thus, $5 billion will be paid for the Nokia’s devices division and $2 billion - for the company’s portfolio of patents. The new owner will access all the elaborations and intellectual property of the corporation. The Finnish company, once dominating on the smartphone arena, has experienced some challenges being leapfrogged by its major rivals – Samsung, Apple, and some other companies. According to the quarterly reports, Nokia’s sales nosedived to the 8-year low in the second quarter of 2013. The deal is set to change the main principles of both companies: the former leader of mobile phones market leaves its niche failing to withstand competition. Microsoft, on the contrary, is actively fighting for every customer and plans to expand its positions.Nokia’s CEO said that the Finnish company intends to focus on the development of maps and navigation systems, the sphere where Nokia feels fairly confident. The company’s cooperation with Microsoft in 2011 resulted in introduction of handsets powered by Windows Phone OS. After the deal was sealed, the shares of the Finnish producer have soared 48%.
