Apple is slated to build a new factory in Arizona near Mesa which will use 100% renewable energy, including solar power, Bloomberg reports on November 5.
The plant’s construction will be performed by GT Advanced Technologies. The project is estimated at $578 million. However, the company has not said what the plant will make. The specialists suggest that the factory will focus on production using small pieces of sapphire glass.
Sapphire covering is widely used in Apple products, in particular in iPhone.
According to Apple’s estimates, the new factory will create more than 2,000 new vacancies, with 700 people employed at the facility itself.
In December 2012, Apple CEO Tim Cook said he is afoot to bring some of the company’s manufacturing back from Asia to the USA. Currently, Apple actively cooperates with one of the largest computer manufacturers – Taiwan company Foxconn.
