Kazakhstan estimates ecological damage at almost $90 million

The failure of the large-scale space project provoked not only the blamestorming, but huge penalties as well. The Ministry of Environment and Water Resources of Kazakhstan conducted a detailed analysis of the consequences prompted by the ineffectual launch of the Proton-M for the country’s ecology. It is worthy of note that the carrier rocket crashed at Kazakhstan-based spaceport Baikonour on July 2, 2013, in 17 seconds after the lift-off. The Proton-M was carrying three Glonass-M navigation satellites. Many people witnessed the accident as the medias were broadcasting live the rocket start. So, the Kazakh experts assessed the damage and billed Russia $89.5 million. The amount of the compensation was calculated in compliance with the Rules of Economic Assessment of Damage Caused by Environmental Pollution adopted by the government on June 27, 2007. Kazakhstan has already filed their claims to the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roskosmos). After the crash, the local authorities of the explosion-stricken region shut down all the grocery stores and suspended the public transport running. In their opinion, the region is under the threat of an environmental disaster.
