Norwegian salmon prices hit 10-year high

The price of Norwegian salmon has reached a 10-year high of almost $7.7 per kilogram, Prime said citing the Association of Fish Market Industrial and Commercial Enterprises. On November 29, the price of one kilogram of fresh salmon from Norway climbed by one dollar - from $6.65 to $7.65.
Norwegian exporters said the problems with logistics caused by adverse weather conditions in the regions of manufacturers are the reason for rising prices. According to the Association of Fish Market Industrial and Commercial Enterprises, such excuses will open the way for Norwegians to sell fish at a price that has no market justification, that is, for any price.
The Association’s statement reads that Russian business community cannot stop unjustified rise in prices and protect consumers from fish inflation.
Russia accounts for 12-15% of Norway's salmon exports. Russian salmon market was estimated at 400 thousand tones with 150 thousand tones falling to Norway, the newspaper Kommersant said on December 3, citing Russia's Federal Fisheries Agency (Rosrybolovstvo). Thus, the net cost of Norwegian salmon is 50 rubles per kilogram, and Russian, 80 rubles.
In mid-August 2013, the Association of Fish Market Industrial and Commercial Enterprises warned against a sharp rise in Norway‘s fresh salmon prices which will trigger higher salmon retail prices. Discussing the increase in the purchase price for salmon, the Association concluded there were “all signs of foul play between Norwegian producers”.
At the same time, the Association highlighted that Russian fish suppliers are unable to provide an adequate response to the actions of Norwegians. It also said than any joint action of importers is considered a cartel by the Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia.
