Public voting came to an end during which any citizen of Russia could vote for official symbol for the ruble. The Russian public has picked the image of the national currency. It will be a Cyrillic "P" with horizontal strokes. In order to promote the new symbol, the regulator plans to mint a one-rouble coin featuring the logo from 2014.
Former Assistant to the President and now the bank’s Governor Elvira Nabiullina said that the regulator will not going insist on the widespread use of the symbol.
Public voting was held on the official website of the Bank of Russia with over 280,000 voters taking part in it. They were asked to choose from 5 symbols. The candidate number two broke forth and kept its first position during the whole voting. As a result, more than 60 percent of respondents voted for the Cyrillic "P" with horizontal strokes. The new symbol was developed more than six years ago by Art. Lebedev Studio. This particular design was favored most of all. Talks about the need to develop and implement a symbol for the Russian ruble, by analogy with the U.S. dollar emerged at the end of the last century.
