According to The New York Times citing the source with the knowledge of the situation, the United States is contemplating a series of cyberattacks on Russia. Experts suggest that this could happen over the next three weeks. This action is going to be Washington’s response to Russia for the hacking of the government agencies.
The periodical says that cyberattacks are intended for President Vladimir Putin as well as military and intelligence services. They will go unnoticed by the wider world. Moreover, these actions will be combined with economic sanctions.
The US government will impose such measures in retaliation for the Russian hacking of federal government networks in December 2020. Back then, the intruders gained access to the networks of the US Treasury Department and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), part of the US Department of Commerce.
The US administration has put the blame on Cozy Bear, a hacker group thought to be linked to Russia's foreign intelligence service. However, Moscow has repeatedly denied these accusations.
