U.S. cold weather triggers gas prices at record-high levels

The U.S. gas prices rose to record-high levels due to the cold weather and snowfalls at the central and northern parts of the country, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Thus, the price for gas supplied from New Jersey to New York rose to $90 per million British thermal units or $3.24 thousand per thousand cubic meters. On Friday, January 3, the price was $14 per million BTU (or $504 per TCM). At two other hubs, prices hit $95 per million BTU. According to Bloomberg, this is a 10-year high. As of January 6, daily consumption of fuel in the U.S. rose to a historic high of 125.7 billion cubic feet (about 3.56 billion cubic meters), The Financial Times said. New York City witnessed 5.0 °F, the coldest January 7 since 1896. In many states, the mercury dipped by 11-20 degrees below normal; in some cities it was -40.0 °F.
Because of heavy snowfall and icy roads, more than 5,000 domestic flights were cancelled. Moreover, Amtrak, a nationwide rail network, suspended service between New York and Boston; the trains headed to Chicago were halted as well. Sixteen people suffered from the snowfall.
