Popular social media Facebook spent over $23 million to ensure security of its CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg in 2020 fiscal year, Fox News reported referring to the company’s annual proxy filing.
The company allocated more than $13.4 million on “personal security for Mr. Zuckerberg at his residences and during personal travel”. Another $10 million was spent on extra security equipment and personnel for his family. The appropriate costs expanded a bit in 2021 from a year ago. In 2019, Facebook’s expenditure on Mark Zuckerberg’s security was no more than $20.4 million.
"Increased costs in 2020 were primarily due to regular personal travel, costs relating to security protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic, increased security coverage during the 2020 US elections and other periods with increased security risk, and market increases in the costs of security personnel," the filing reads. Importantly, the security service at Facebook has "identified specific threats to Mr. Zuckerberg" a few times.
