The US Mint is going to issue coins honoring notable American women. In such a way, the country will celebrate the accomplishments of great American women, starting with writer Maya Angelou and astronaut Sally Ride in 2022.
The US Mint is planning to feature as many as five new women on quarter dollars each year through 2025. The first coins will be decorated with famous poet and memoirist Angela, first female activist of the Cherokee tribe (Indians) Wilma Mankiller, leader of the New Mexico electoral movement Adeline Otero-Warren, as well as Sally Ride, the first US female astronaut, and Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American Hollywood actress.
According to the information on the US Mint's website, the new coins are designed to celebrate the contribution of women to the history of the United States. "Honorees will be from a variety of fields and from ethnically, racially and geographically diverse backgrounds", the mint says.
"We thank the US Mint for recognizing Wilma and other women. The real value of this coin is the inspiration it brings to the beautiful half of humanity," Charlie Soap, husband of Wilma Mankiller, who died in 2010, said
