Sochi gold medals made of silver

The main problem of journalists reporting on Sochi Olympic Games is their incompetence in sports. Such a conclusion can be made on the basis of the fact that they cover everything but sports: the number of pillows in hotels, quality of paving slabs, etc. Of course, sets of Olympic medals could not go without mention. This time, predatory writers considered the medals from the viewpoint of their nominal. Setting aside the price of victory, they descended to its money's-worth. Thus, they imagined that an athlete would pawn a gold medal to the pawnbroker gaining only $550 for it. The thing is that gold medals are silver inside but coated in a thin layer (no more than 6 grams) of gold. However, Sochi Olympics organizers noted that Russian medals are the biggest and heaviest ones in the Olympic Games’ history. With over 10 centimeters in diameter and about 2 millimeters thick, the first place medal weighs half a kilogram. A fully golden medal of such parameters would worth $21.5 thousand. It is interesting that pure gold medals were last time given to athletes in Stockholm at the 1912 Summer Olympics. Silver and bronze cost $310 and $3.25 respectively. In total, 98 sets of medals are planned to be awarded at the Olympic Games in Sochi.
