Xiaomi overtakes Apple and Samsung in global smartphone sales

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has recently outpaced its rivals, Apple and Samsung, to become a leader in smartphone sales.

June turned out to be especially favorable for Xiaomi as its sales surged by 26%. This made the company the fastest-growing brand for the month. As a result, the company's share in the global smartphone sales in June amounted to 17.1%. Meanwhile, the performance of Samsung and Apple was less impressive with 15.7% and 14.3% respectively. In the second quarter of 2021, Samsung’s sales dropped by 24% to 59.7 million units while Apple’s sales were down by 8% to reach 48.9 million units.

Today, Xiaomi smartphone shipments have increased by 98% to 50 million compared to the same period last year. Experts name two main reasons for such a rise. The first reason is associated with manufacturing and trade restrictions induced by the coronavirus pandemic in the second quarter of this year. The second supporting factor is high demand for all Xiaomi models of both mid-range and premium segments. This combination resulted in booming sales for the period between April and June 2021.

Apart from Apple and Samsung, Xiaomi has surpassed one more rival - Huawei. The company recorded a decline in the number of smartphones sold amid tougher US sanctions. This is how Xiaomi became a top player in such markets as China, Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

In addition to this, disruption to Samsung production in some countries has also contributed to the success of the Chinese brand. Amid a surge of a new coronavirus strain, Samsung has faced a significant decline in its product supply.
