Toyota, Honda, and Suzuki had to suspend production in some of their factories due to abrupt change in weather, Bloomberg reports on February 17.
As of February 17, Toyota closed production in the cities of Takaoka (Toyama prefecture) and Toyota (based in Aiti prefecture) where Corolla, IQ, Prius, and Camry are built.
Meanwhile, Honda stopped output in Saitama factory, near Tokyo, and Suzuki halted production in Shizuoka. Honda and Suzuki has not announced when their facilities will be reopened. According to Reuters, Fuji Heavy Industries also had to suspend operations of its Subaru brand.
The heavy snow storms disrupted shipments of car parts and raw materials. Moreover, factory workers struggled to reach the plants.
The Financial Times reports that total number of the factories closed due to severe weather accounts to 9. Nevertheless, the edition reports that share prices of the automakers were unaffected.
On February 17, Japanese media said that 15 people have been killed in Japan due to the storm and more than 1,600 are injured. Heavy snow led to the cancellation of flights in major airports in Japan. The country was hit by bad weather on February 14.
