Scotland counts losses from flushing rubbish down the drains

Herald Scotland reports that every year Scotland loses 7 million pounds due to blockages in drains. About 80% of the blockages are caused by unsuitable items flushed down toilets. For example, in 2013 there were 40,000 cases.
Cooking fat, baby dampers, and jeans are the most common obstructions found in the drains. On the top of that, larger bulky items such as dead sheep and a bike were fished out of street sewers. As the result the abundance of inappropriate items lead to clogs. In 2013 thousand of houses were flooded.
Scottish Water, an organization that ensures proper work of sewage system, launched a new advertising campaign attempting to raise awareness of how to keep the sewer system clear of waste. The company has already signed contracts with local TV- and radio stations.
Chris Wallace, director of communications at Scottish Water, said: 'This drain is designed to take only the used water from sinks, showers and baths and pee, poo and toilet paper from the toilet.’ Moreover, food waste is supposed to be disposed via food recycling system. More than half of households have an access to it, The Scotsman reports.
