According to CNBC, most customers of Coinbase, a cryptocurrency exchange, lost their savings kept in e-wallets. The most peculiar thing is that people even saw their money vanish from their accounts. However, the management of the cryptocurrency exchange almost ignored the problem and did not return money to its clients.
Therefore, the FBI began the investigation of the incident. Representatives of the organization said that the situation was worsened by the fact that cryptocurrency transactions cannot be reversed. Once criminals access an account, funds can be drained in minutes.
One of the victims said that the management of Coinbase did not react to the complaint. Experts say that “SIM swapping, where fraudsters seize control of a victim’s phone number and SIM card through their phone company, is to blame for many of the cryptocurrency thefts”.
Customers of Coinbase that became victims of scammers have created a group on Facebook. The group members are writing various posts to attract attention of the company’s management and find a community with other disgruntled users. Complaints abound on Reddit and Twitter as well. The company’s support service managers reply to the messages, writing that they have sent the issue to the specialized team.
In the last 5 years, users of the cryptocurrency exchange have filed over 11,000 complaints with the Federal Trade Commission and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. In fact, Coinbase’s customer service has changed. According to CNBC, now, representatives of the crypto exchange have become more attentive to their clients’ complaints. In July 2021, the company announced that it was ready to roll out a live chat and phone support.
