Apparently, the negative effects of Brexit will continue to plague the UK. Another disturbing consequence of the country's withdrawal from the European Union was the problems of cooperation with the United States due to a number of disagreements that emerged following Brexit. US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi demanded that they be bridged immediately.
There will be no US-UK trade deal unless the British government solves post-Brexit disagreements with the European Union, Nancy Pelosi warned. According to her, the lack of agreement on Brexit risks destabilizing Northern Ireland’s peace. Although Northern Ireland left the European Union as part of the United Kingdom, it remained in the EU customs area. This made it possible to keep an open border between the Republic of Ireland and the rest of Ireland but resulted in the introduction of a number of additional rules for trading relationships with Britain. This was essential to preserve the 1998 peace deal, known as the Belfast or Good Friday Agreement, which ended years of armed confrontation between the British authorities and local radical groups.
A transatlantic trade deal between the United States and Britain is “very unlikely” if the Belfast Agreement is harmed, the House speaker noted. “This is not said as any threat. It is a prediction,” Pelosi said. During her visit to London, she met with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Johnson’s office said the prime minister “outlined the UK’s concerns with the way the (Northern Ireland) Protocol is being implemented and the impact it is having on the people of Northern Ireland.”
