Who will help troubled Ukraine?

Financial bailout for Ukraine is a burning issue now. The world leading powers are competing for providing the teetering country with a loan on easy terms. Temptation is overwhelming, especially when the nation is in chaos and government changes swiftly. Today you are a president and can borrow money, but tomorrow someone else will become a president, so let him pay the debt. The Russian Federation did not miss the chance to help its neighbor. President Vladimir Putin said that the government backed the idea of granting another bailout to Ukraine. However, at the very crucial moment Russia’s western partners asked it not to do so. The officials underlined that leading economies should work together in the framework of the IMF to get the Ukrainian government to conduct reforms vital to revive its fragile economy. Turns out, big-league politics does not approve a direct help. Offering financial aid, a creditor should first call on to the IMF. Nevertheless, there is always a way out. Thus, Vladimir Putin told the journalists, “Considering that Ukrainian Naftogaz fails to pay Gazprom, the government is evaluating different options.” So, it is likely that some money will eventually reach Ukraine. Meanwhile, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller shed some light on the situation. “As regards last year's debt, $1.3 billion has been paid, just under half. Ukraine's total debt for Russian gas is $1.529 billion. In conditions where Ukraine is not meeting its obligations, not fulfilling the agreements reached with the signing of the amendment to the contract that provides the discount, Gazprom has decided not to extend the discount starting at the beginning of next month.”
