EU announces €1 billion aid package for Afghanistan

Despite the non-recognition of the new government in Afghanistan, civilized nations cannot ignore the humanitarian crisis currently taking place in the country. This is why the European Union pledged to provide €1 billion to avert a major collapse.

This programme was introduced by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. On Twitter, she noted that the support package was for the Afghan people because they should not pay the price of the Taliban's actions. Thus, €300 million will be allocated to provide additional support to the vaccination programme, shelters, and human rights protection. Another €250 million will be used to finance urgent needs, such as health and safety improvements.

The US also reported that it would send humanitarian aid, stressing that such assistance should not be linked to political issues. Representatives of the Afghan and US governments described the situation as an attempt to develop diplomatic relations. Earlier, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on countries to “unfreeze assets and allow development aid to flow into the Afghanistan economy or risk watching it collapse”. He said bolstering Afghanistan’s economy could be done without recognizing the Taliban.
