When some countries prefer to crack down on crypto mining, Canada makes a decision to take advantage of this activity. As an experiment, local companies are now preparing to harness electricity created by bitcoin mining to heat an entire city.
Homes of North Vancouver residents will become the first to be heated from BTC mining. Cleantech cryptocurrency miner MintGreen joined forces with the city's energy utility company to heat over 100 homes and offices using innovative low-carbon energy. A joint press release was published on MintGreen’s official website. Lonsdale Energy Corporation (LEC), the local energy utility company, has been actively seeking to decarbonize its operations in recent years. The firm is now shifting towards renewable and clean energy resources, abandoning the use of natural gas. That is why its management team gladly agreed to participate in this experiment.
MintGreen patented the so-called “digital boilers”. They recover 96% of the electric power used for mining the flagship cryptocurrency. Special equipment converts this energy into heat that can be supplied to residents’ homes and industrial buildings. “Cryptocurrency miners run at full capacity 365 days a year, which creates the unique opportunity to provide a reliable and clean heating baseload for North Vancouver’s district energy system,” MintGreen noted.
