The United States and the European Union have agreed to end a dispute over steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump in 2018. The conflict was resolved owing to the efforts of the current head of state. Thus, the agreement on such an important issue helped to eliminate the source of friction between the parties. The news was officially confirmed by National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. According to new rules, the previously introduced tariffs will not be abolished entirely, but a certain amount of European steel and aluminum will be imported into the United States without any duties.
The dispute erupted between the long-time allies because of Donald Trump. In the course of the conflict, Washington and Brussels put mutual duties on the imports of products. In October 2020, the European Union hit $4 billion of American goods with tariffs. Meanwhile, the United States was authorized to impose tariffs worth $7.5 billion of EU exports in 2019. The US and the EU’s plans to settle the trade dispute became known in May.
