SpaceX founder and Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that he would sell some of his holdings in the electric car company.
The reason for such a decision was the statement of David Beasley, director of the United Nations' World Food Program (WFP). He said that a small group of ultra-wealthy individuals could help solve world hunger and cope with its aftermath with just a fraction of their net worth.
The head of the UN World Food Program called on Elon Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to donate $6 billion to prevent 42 million people from dying of hunger. According to Bloomberg, the Tesla CEO's net worth is estimated at $300 billion. This means that Beasley is asking for a donation of just 2% of the businessman’s fortune.
In reply to this, Musk asked Beasley to explain how $6 billion could fix the problem. “If WFP can describe on this Twitter thread exactly how $6B will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now,” he tweeted. However, in a follow-up tweet, Musk added that the UN’s plan must include “open source accounting, so the public sees precisely how the money is spent.”
Interestingly, Elon Musk has topped the ranking of the world’s richest people this year. Earlier, the businessman announced his intention to get rid of some of his possessions on Earth to invest in building the first city on Mars.
