In an interview with the German newspaper Handelsblatt, Gazprom’s Director General Alexander Medvedev assured Germany that the monopoly will fulfill all its obligations regarding gas deliveries.
“We will fulfill our contract liabilities to Germany,” Medvedev said. He added the volumes of gas supplies are fixed in long-term contracts, so any reduction of supplies would be punished by “big fines.” “So, there is no point in depriving ourselves of gas sales earnings,” he noted.
The official also said that the fuel is not a weapon, it is a commodity. A supplier is always interested in selling this energy. Medvedev expressed a point of view that on the back of the Ukrainian developments and concerns that Russia might cut or even stop gas supplies, Gazprom often feels “aggressive and sometimes even unfair attitude” of the West.
Germany can meet only 10% of its gas demand. The Federal Republic imports another 90% from primarily Russia and then Norway.
