Champagne overtakes Bitcoin and NYSE index in 2021

According to Reuters, the price of premium champagne soared in the run-up to the New Year and Christmas holidays. The reason for this was increased demand from a number of investors.

At the end of 2021, platforms for investment and sale of vintage wines reported record activity on the part of investors. Against the background of growing demand and limited supply, premium champagne prices have risen significantly. Reuters estimates that this has contributed to revenue growth for online wine investment and vintage platforms.

Data from LiveTrade, which runs the "Bordeaux Index" of drinks, showed that in 2021 a record 220,000 bottles had been traded. By the end of the year, the average price rose by over 30%.

The cost of champagne sold on LiveTrade has multiplied. Salon le Mesnil’s 2002 vintage surged more than 80% in value and currently sells for roughly $15,700 a bottle. Reuters reports that beats bitcoin's 75% rise and is nearly five times more than the 18% made by the NYFANG+TM stocks index (NYFANG) of Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, Google, Tesla, and Microsoft which have powered world equity market gains of late. Taittinger's Comtes de Champagne 2006 as well as Krug's 2002 and 1996 vintages were up by more than 70%.

Dom Perignon P2 and Krug 2000 are estimated to have outpaced some stock indexes. Champagne gained 33.7% in 11 months while the FTSE All World stock index rose by 15%.

According to Justin Nock, director of winemaking at the investment company Oeno Group, the price has risen due to growing demand and limited supply, as well as an increase in activity of traditional investors.
