Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) reported that its inspectors detected an unacceptable amount of lead in a batch of sausages delivered to Primorsky Krai from the U.S. On the whole, 12 tons of the harmful food have been supplied to the region. Currently, officers from the supervision authorities are removing the contaminated sausages from retailers.
In the course of the research carried out by the Federal Primorsky veterinary laboratory, it was found out that the lead content in the 12-ton batch of chicken sausages exceeded the limit twofold. It means that 0.85-0.87 milligrams of lead account for a kilo of the food stuff instead of the allowable 0.5 milligram. Importantly, specialists noted that a lead dose of 1 milligram will cause health complications, whereas a 10-milligram dose might be lethal for a human.
