According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla has recalled more than 800,000 electric vehicles owing to some serious technical defects.
The NHTSA research revealed that a great number of Tesla cars posed risks to traffic safety. Consequently, the leading concern had to recall 817,143 vehicles due to faulty seat belt chimes. The fact is that the seat belt reminder chimes may not sound when the vehicles are started and the driver hasn’t buckled up. This factor is of vital importance since it indicates the driver's disregard for seat belts. The agency noted that those vehicles did not meet the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.
The NHTSA experts drew attention to technical defects in the 2021 and 2022 Model S sedan and Model X SUV, the 2017 through 2020 Model 3 sedan, as well as the 2020 Model Y. Tesla has acknowledged its shortcomings and is planning to update the software of its vehicles. The management board reassured the owners of Tesla cars that it would provide a free upgrade of their software.
Last month, the company had to recall a large number of electric vehicles, mainly Model S and Model X. The reason was technical problems with the media control unit (MCU) and the display. In December 2021, Tesla recalled more than 475,000 electric cars due to technical defects that may increase the risk of accidents.
