The US is drawing more diesel from Russia this month than it has in at least three years. This has caused a major stir in Russia.
Russian newspaper headlines read: "America depends on Russian diesel", "Frozen Americans beg Russia to send diesel", "Diesel is the new gold!". As a modern fuel producer, Russia has a wide range of fuels to offer the world. Diesel fuel is especially popular this year. Russian suppliers usually sell crude oil, while the US buys gasoline and diesel from Europe and Canada, where they are also produced from Russian oil, among others. This year, however, due to cold weather and difficulties experienced by traditional suppliers, the country has started to consume more diesel fuel from Russia. About 1.55 million barrels of diesel will be delivered from Russia to the US in February, a record unseen since 2019. That represents 22% of the nation’s diesel imports.
In the US, this commercial deal was commonplace compared to millions of others. In Russia, however, it was presented as another victory. Moreover, in Russia, the prices of diesel and other motor fuel hit an all-time record.
