Toyota no. 1 selling carmaker with sales over 10,000,000 units per year

Japan’s Toyota, the world’s biggest carmaker, sold 10,130,000 vehicles worldwide in the fiscal year of 2013 ending March 31, 2014.
Thus, no carmaker has sold over 10 million vehicles in a year. The record sales make Toyota the top-selling automaker for a second year in a row. Besides, Toyota managed to boost its sales by nearly 500,000 units as compared to 2012.
By the results of Q1, the Japanese carmaker secured the global leadership having sold 2,580,000 vehicles in the January-March period. Thus, the leader is outpacing its rivals such as Detroit-based GM with 2,420,000 sold vehicles and Germany’s Volkswagen with 2,400,000 million sold cars.
The Japanese corporation headed the top list among the world’s largest carmakers twice: in 2012 with sales volume of 9,750,000 cars and in 2010. General Motors was the no. 1 selling carmaker for the next year of 2011 before losing the title to Toyota. The slump in sales was caused by the aftermath of the disastrous earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011 which halted the operation of several Toyota’s production facilities in Japan.
