The US is the world’s dominant billionaire country. However, the richest Americans have social responsibility. They donate huge sums to charity and various social projects.
Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, is a perfect example of this view. According to the data specified in his filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the CEO of Tesla donated a total of 5,044,000 shares in the world's most valuable automaker to charity from November 19 to 29 last year. The Chronicle of Philanthropy portal ranked Musk as America's second-biggest donor after Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates last year. Nevertheless, both Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos lag behind philanthropists like Warren Buffett and George Soros. Business magazine Forbes reported that Musk and Bezos had donated less than 1% of their net worth, while Buffett and Soros had given away more than 20% by early September 2021.
Notably, apart from making donations to charity, Musk encourages environmental projects. For example, he recently offered $100 million prizes to those who can come up with a technology to help remove carbon from the atmosphere. Moreover, Elon Musk donated $20 million to schools in Cameron County, Texas, and $10 million to the city of Brownsville.
Last year, Musk tweeted, "If (the United Nations World Food Programme) can describe ... exactly how $6 billion will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now and do it."
