Nord Stream 2 has been controversial from its inception. Germany has now halted the pipeline approval in response to Russia's move in eastern Ukraine.
Germany’s Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Habeck has addressed concerns about the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. According to Mr. Habeck, the termination of the certification of the pipeline does not mean the project will never get its approval. However, under certain circumstances, it could not come into service. The official stressed that Berlin is coordinating its moves with its allies in Europe and the United States. "From a geopolitical point of view, the pipeline is a mistake,” the minister expressed his regret. Habeck believes that Nord Stream 2 is not just a commercial project as energy policy is always geopolitical these days.
Washington welcomed Germany’s decision to halt the pipeline certification. The United States is in close consultations with Germany to ensure Nord Stream 2 does not move forward, the statement made by the Biden administration said. “We are united in our support for Ukraine. We are united in our opposition to Russia’s aggression. We are united in our resolve to defend our Alliance,” Biden emphasized.
The fate of the project now depends on how Russia will honour its international obligations, or rather, on how President Vladimir Putin will act.
