Although Russia warns that it may impose response sanctions against western countries, it will hardly have enough resources for that. The fact is that foreign investors do not keep money in Russian rubles or educate their children in Russian universities. However, there are several pain points and Russian uranium is among them.
At the height of the sanctions fever, US companies asked the White House not to ban the import of Russian uranium. Russia has always supplied cheap natural resources. For many years of cooperation, the US nuclear power industry has become deeply dependent on cheap uranium. Now, US nuclear enterprises are not ready to refuse Russian supplies of the fuel. They have even lobbied the White House to allow uranium imports from Russia to continue. Otherwise, they will have to raise electricity prices.
Although the US authorities have agreed to take into account businesses’ requirements, they will still take measures to make Russia bear responsibility for the Ukrainian crisis.
