The United States has warned China against getting around US sanctions and export restrictions on Russia.
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo stated the US would carefully monitor attempts by Chinese companies to circumvent sanctions against Russia. According to Raimondo, the United States would impose harsh penalties on violators.
“They have their own self-interest to not supply this stuff to Russia,” the Commerce Secretary told the New York Times.
According to independent observers, the US could ban exports of American equipment and software to China. These restrictions would severely affect the Chinese high-tech industry, including Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) – mainland China’s largest chip manufacturer. Raimondo noted that China cannot make the world’s most advanced semiconductors.
The current US export controls apply to all companies using American-made software and technology. The United States is pressuring China into joining sanctions against Russia.
