Amid the current geopolitical crisis, the French authorities are planning to issue vouchers to help middle and low-income families facing rising food prices. Notably, French citizens, whose monthly income is lower or equal to €1,026, are considered financially vulnerable. “We will be facing a world-wide food crisis. I want to put in place a food voucher [system] to help the most modest households and the middle class facing these additional costs,” French President Emmanuel Macron said. The President emphasized that France would prepare appropriate initiatives in cooperation with other European countries. The initiative is similar to the one aimed at the energy resources sector. Macron also notes that the country needs to secure domestic food suppliers and improve alternative ways of food supplies. The President told his government to develop measures to curb the rise in gas tariffs and electricity prices. Meanwhile, the EU countries are also mulling over a plan to enhance global food security. European Union finance ministers have warned that due to the complex geopolitical situation, the energy crisis in the region may be worsened by food crises. Following the surge in oil and gas prices, wheat prices are rising rapidly, too. French Minister of Economy and Finance Bruno Le Maire says that Russia and Ukraine are major grain exporters, which means a threat to supplies.
