Greece ready to cut Russian gas supplies

Greece said it would refrain from Russian gas supplies in the near future. According to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, price hikes and a possible energy sector crisis will not stall the country’s plans to cut its reliance on Russian energy. Mitsotakis stressed that his government was prepared for a “worst-case scenario where gas supplies from Russia are halted.” While visiting the liquefied natural gas storage facility at Revythousa near Athens, the Prime Minister noted that the present infrastructure would be crucial for the diversification of the country’s resources. “Here in Revythousa, the heart of our country’s natural gasification plant beats. In this design, Revythousa in its current form, but also in its upgraded form, plays a decisive role. We are striving to achieve the lowest possible energy prices for consumers, households, and businesses,” Mitsotakis pledged. When touching upon the reasons for the collapse in the energy market, the Prime Minister stated that it was an artificially created deficit that had nothing to do with market relations. “I want to reiterate once again that we are facing an unprecedented explosion in gas prices. This problem is imported. A problem that concerns the whole of Europe and that is why I have personally fought for a pan-European answer to a problem that is not purely national,” Mitsotakis concluded.
