US sees signs of worsening fertilizer crisis

The American Conservative reports that the looming crisis in the fertilizer market is casting shadows over the US. The American Conservative columnist Michael Warren Davis notes the US is facing an acute fertilizer shortage due to the failure of the US economy. According to Davis, the US produces only 7% of potash, an essential nutrient used in making fertilizer. At the same time, Russia and Belarus cover almost 50% of the global potash supply. Davis stresses that the livestock farming industry is also crippling. The burning issues surrounding this sector of the US economy are out of government’s consideration. The reviewer says this has led to a shortage of cow manure and other fertilizers. Davis is sure that the US is unlikely to experience widespread famine amid a lack of fertilizer supplies. Today the country mostly relies on imports from Canada. However, the US may compete with other countries for the remaining supply with Brazil becoming the main rival.
