Chinese journalists at Global Times have been actively developing the idea that the United States and western countries are hitting themselves by providing military support to Ukraine.
The journalists suppose that “although US President Joe Biden vowed to stand with Ukraine for ‘as long as it takes’, war and Ukraine fatigue has been witnessed in the US and across many of its Western allies”. In addition, there are mounting doubts on how long the US will be able to support Ukraine. On top of that, the authors of the article frequently repeat one and the same phrase, which describes how Russia may benefit from the sanctions imposed by the US and some western countries. "Originally, the US intended to exploit Ukraine as a pivotal pawn to weaken Russia. Ironically, instead of dragging down Russia, the situation has been used by Moscow, in turn, to pin down the US and the Western countries," Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert and TV commentator, told the Global Times. "The US strategy may backfire on itself,” the expert believes. Song Zhongping also warned that the longer the Ukrainian crisis lasted, the graver damage the US and the West would suffer. “As the party that actually incited the Ukraine crisis, the US is shooting itself in the foot,” Song Zhongping said, supposing that further assistance to Ukraine may turn into a heavy burden for the West.
