Thus, National Grid, UK’s electricity network operator, has introduced a new scheme aimed at reducing energy consumption and the risk of blackouts during winter. The company came up with an idea to pay consumers who cut back on their electricity usage during peak hours. Beginning September, National Grid will pay households up to £6 per kilowatt hour saved. “We are developing a new service that will be available for consumers to benefit from across this winter and will be announcing further information soon,” a company's spokesperson commented. The rebate will help avoid power outages during high-demand hours. As the energy crisis is getting worse amid supply cuts from Russia, the UK is bracing for a tough winter this year.
