Firewood producers expect sales to soar during the upcoming winter season. In the United Kingdom, demand for this type of fuel is projected to spike by as much as 20%.
The upcoming winter is believed to be a tough season for UK households due to the looming energy crisis. In this light, firewood sales could increase by 20% from the same period in 2021. According to Nic Snell, the managing director at Certainly Wood, firewood prices in the country have already risen but they are nowhere near the increase seen in energy prices. He suggests that the amount of firewood needed to heat homes through the winter will cost a UK household around £600 ($710).
The United Kingdom used to import a significant amount of firewood from Russia and Belarus. However, transport costs grew when sanctions were imposed on Moscow and Minsk, Snell pinpointed.
Other European countries are now stockpiling firewood as well. Thus, Hungary banned exports of firewood in the wake of the energy crisis and record prices. The Hungarian authorities had to tighten its firewood export control due to the strategic importance of this material to the energy security of the country.
