EU’s energy policy declared “suicidal”

Unlike many developed countries, EU member states continue to ignore concerns of their citizens. They are pursuing a policy guided by their own self-interest while disregarding popular opinion and the resulting protests.

Their actions have attracted sharp criticism from The American Conservative (TAC). The magazine’s journalists have condemned the EU’s energy policy and labeled the European Union “a sick man threatening to cut off its own life support.” TAC quoted Georg Friedrichs, the head of German energy gas supplier Gasag, who stated that Germans could easily survive the winter with the temperature of homes set at 18 degrees Celsius. “The young and fit can get through the winter with two sweaters and a little climbing on the stairs,” Friedrichs said. Peter Lautz, the head of the Stadtwerke Wiesbaden Netz utility company which supplies 170,000 consumers with electricity, warned that Germany could face blackouts and power grid collapse due to electric heaters.

The energy crisis could severely impact not only the industry but the social sector as well. TAC has called the EU’s policy “suicidal” and accused European politicians of ignoring the plight of their citizens. In the meantime, utility costs in Germany could increase significantly from October, and the German ruling elite does not care about it, TAC noted.
