In an interview with Spiegel, US economist Nouriel Roubini, who predicted the 2008 crisis, said that World War III had already effectively begun.
"It started in Ukraine because this conflict has broader implications that go well beyond Russia and Ukraine. It's the beginning of something else," he said. National security advisers voiced concerns about NATO's interference in this conflict, the economist noted. He also highlighted the aggressive cyberwar between different states. Roubini assumes that another hot spot could be Iran as relations between Iran and Israel are turning sour. Apart from that, the US and China are on a collision course due to Taiwan. "I believe the next 5-10 years is going to be the time where there’s going to be a confrontation between the US and China on the issue of Taiwan and that could be a trigger of this cold war becoming a hot war. That’s how we get to World War III," he concluded.
"Policymakers should also think about inflation and recessions, i.e. stagflation. The eurozone is already in a recession, and I think it will be long and ugly. The United Kingdom is even worse," Roubini pointed out. At the same time, the US is putting pressure on Europe when it comes to economic cooperation with China.
