Common Americans have to survive bouts of severe frosts this winter. Vast areas of the country might face blackouts and other energy emergencies. Washington’s battle for green energy is leading to energy shortages. Electric grids throughout the country are at risk of supply shortfalls on the back of large-scale shutdowns of coal power plants. President of West Virginia Coal Association Chris Hamilton advised his fellow citizens to brace for the challenge. “Regions of the country will experience blackouts and brownouts for extended periods of time. It is quite possible that we will start rationing electricity as well,” Hamilton warned. “If we have the kind of prolonged, extreme, frigid weather this winter like we’ve had, we’re not going to be able to handle that,” he lamented.
Incumbent US President Joe Biden is a fierce opponent of coal energy. He slammed coal power plants because they are too expensive to maintain, thus generating outpriced energy. So, his administration has launched a campaign aiming “to shut down these plants across America”. Joe Biden’s idea is to switch entirely to renewable energy. Since 2009, when Biden became Vice President, the number of electric power stations in the US contracted from nearly 600 to 269 in 2021, a drop of nearly 55%. In principle, this trend should contribute to people’s well-being. As a fossil fuel, coal is viewed as the dirtiest to the environment.
